How Sule is tackling insecurity in Nasarawa

No fewer than 31 contributors were kidnapped in various areas across the state and were released on ransom, between 2023 and 2024. Sadly, the vast majority of the kidnapped contributors were low-profile contributors whose cases were not brought to the state’s attention.

To compound the security woes in the state early this year, the National Executive of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, a Fulani socio-cultural association led by its national president, Abdullahi Bello Badejo, launched a voluntary ethnic security outfit in Nasarawa State. The personnel of the security outfit were made up entirely of Fulani men, to help curb persistent cases of kidnapping and banditry in Nasarawa.

Badejo launched the security outfit in Lafia with 1,144 personnel, and declared war on kidnappers and various criminalities in the state, vowing to make the state particularly inhospitable for them.

A week after the launch of the protection outfits, operatives of the Department of State Services arrested Bodejo, over the introduction of an ethnic vigilante community in Nasarawa State.

Sources said Badejo was arrested over fears that the introduction of the nomad vigilant community could escalate the security challenges in the state and across the country, noting further that the community was not registered with the DSS, the police, or any other security agency, and therefore it was not recognized by the federal government.

The govt. of Nasarawa Assert equally denied any data or approval of the formation of ethnic safety outfits.

The governor had openly denied involvement in the formation of the nomad vigilante community.

In an attempt to find a solution to the insecurity in the state, Governor Abdullahi Sule recently convened an emergency security meeting with all the traditional rulers, security agencies in the state, and various relevant stakeholders, to find a lasting solution to the rising cases of banditry of banditry in the state.

At the meeting, the governor expressed concerns over the escalation of security challenges in the state, particularly kidnappings, as well as activities of ethnic militia groups.

“The reason for the meeting has to do with the security situation that we have observed, in particular during my absence, when certain areas were escalated. It’s indeed a cause for concern that we continue to see an increase in the number of kidnappings, particularly in Keffi, Doma, Lafia, Nasarawa, Obi, Keana, Karu, and Nasarawa Local Government Areas of the state.

“We have also observed an increase in the activities of the Bassa militia terrorizing innocent people, particularly in areas surrounding Shegye, Katakpa, and a few other villages in Toto Local Government Area.

“Now we agree that on the other hand we have seen some increase in the dispute, in particular between communities, such as the one we have seen in the Udege area where a person was killed as a result of confusion within the same ethnic community,” he said.

Sule disclosed that having met with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu as well as some security chiefs in Abuja, where security issues were discussed, it became necessary to call for the emergency security council meeting.

He identified that as a result of the activities of the Bassa militia group, which has previously been operating under the auspices of the Bassa Vigilante Personnel, his administration was considering banning all single ethnic community vigilante groups operating in the area, including the Fulani Vigilante Personnel that has existed in the area since 2009.

“Indubitably one of the discussions that we’re going to agree with right now time is to think in regards to the banning of any single ethnic community vigilante that’s working in the allege. Any particular ethnic community organising a vigilante will seemingly be banned,” he talked about.

The Governor added that his administration would give participants of such ethnic vigilante groups a grace period within which to join the already existing community vigilante groups.

Citing the powers vested in him under Section 97A of the Penal Code, as well as other relevant regulations, Governor Sule, acting on the recommendation of the State Security Council, banned the Fulani ethnic vigilante group known as Kungiyar Zaman Lafiya, the Bassa Vigilante Group, as well as the Eggon Vigilante Personnel.

Through Executive Order No. 1 of 2024, signed by the Governor, the Nasarawa State Executive also banned any other association, movement, group, or society affiliated with the group operating under the guise of ethnic vigilante.

“Similar Organizations include any association, movement or group of persons or society in any name known as or formed, with the purpose and object of providing security among particular ethnic groups in Nasarawa State by means of the use of force or arms and others.”

Accordingly, the Kungiyar Zaman Lafiya Nomad Vigilante, Bassa Vigilante, Eggon Vigilante, and related organizations are hereby proscribed and declared unlawful societies that are inimical to good governance in the state.

The State Executive, on account of this fact, directed that members of the Kungiyar Zaman Lafiya Nomad Vigilante, Bassa Vigilante, Eggon Vigilante, and related organizations to surrender all weapons or arms in their possession along with uniforms to the Commissioner of Police Nasarawa State within two weeks from the date of issuance of the order.

The governor, on account of this fact, urged residents of the state to keep hope alive while assuring them of his government’s commitment to tackling insecurity, expressing the determination of his administration to mobilize every available resource to address the security challenges and make “communities safer for life, liberty, and livelihoods.”
