Study: Tag-Team between Oceans and Continents Triggered Mesozoic Extinctions of Marine Life

Top Stories Tamfitronics In a paper published in the journal Nature Geosciencescientists offer a new explanation for a string of severe environmental crises, called oceanic anoxic events, which happened between 185 and 85 million years ago (Mesozoic era); these occurred when the seas became critically depleted of dissolved oxygen.Oceanic anoxic events are geologically abrupt phases of extreme oxygen depletion in the oceans that disrupted marine ecosystems and brought about evolutionary turnover. Typically lasting approximately 1.5 million years, these events occurred frequently during the Mesozoic era, from about 183 to 85 million years ago. One hypothesis suggests that anoxic events resulted from enhanced chemical weathering of Earth’s surface in a greenhouse world shaped by high volcanic carbon outgassing. Gernon et al. tested this hypothesis using a combination of plate reconstructions, tectonic-geochemical analysis and global biogeochemical modeling....

GCCs pay up to 20% more than IT cos: Study

Business new tamfitronics HYDERABAD: Global capability centres (GCCs) are not only rapidly making their presence felt across India's tech landscape in terms of their expanding footprint, which is now spilling over beyond tier-1 cities to tier-2 centres, but also when it comes to heftier pay packages.GCCs are offering 12-20% higher compensation compared to traditional IT products and services companies or even non-tech companies hiring for tech roles, the findings of a TeamLease Digital report show.India has over 1,600 GCCs employing over 1.66 million professionals. This is poised to touch 1,900 GCCs with over two million professionals by 2025, focusing on GenAI, AI/ML, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and RPA, the report said. This is even as the Indian tech industry is projected to reach $350 billion by 2025 with significant investments in...

New Study: Just 10 Minutes of Mindfulness Can Reduce Depression by 19%

Lifestyle A global study found that brief daily mindfulness sessions using the Medito app improved mental health and encouraged healthier lifestyle behaviors, with lasting effects on well-being and habits like exercise and sleep.Recent research shows that daily short mindfulness practices can significantly enhance mental health and encourage healthier lifestyles, with sustained benefits over time.A recent study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology by researchers from the Universities of Bath and Southampton reveals that just 10 minutes of daily mindfulness practice can enhance well-being, alleviate depression and anxiety, and increase motivation to adopt healthier lifestyle habits, such as improved exercise, eating, and sleeping routines. The research, which enrolled 1247 adults from 91 countries, demonstrates that brief daily mindfulness sessions, delivered through a free mobile app Medito, can have profound benefits.Participants, most of whom had no...

Study: Active, Seafloor Hydrothermal Systems on Small Ocean Worlds Could Support Life

Top Stories Tamfitronics Ocean worlds are planetary bodies that have a liquid ocean, often under an icy shell or within the rocky interior. In our own Solar System, several moons of Jupiter and Saturn are ocean worlds. Some ocean worlds are thought to have hydrothermal circulation, where water, rocks, and heat combine to drive fluids in and out of the seafloor. Hydrothermal circulation would impact the chemistry of the water and rock of ocean worlds, and could help life to develop deep below the icy surface. In a new study, planetary researchers used computer simulations of hydrothermal circulation, based on a well-understood system on Earth, to measure the influence of lower gravity at values appropriate for ocean worlds smaller than our home planet. The simulations with ocean world (lower) gravity result in fluid circulation much...
