More trouble for Sunita Williams? NASA fears astronauts may stay months in space: Here’s why

NASA Space Technology India-origin Nasa astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are stranded in space with no exact date for return to Earth announced. The two astronauts were unable to board their flight home after the Boeing Starliner spacecraft malfunctioned during the journey to ISS. Launched on June 5, Starliner's first crewed test flight was projected to last only a few days. NASA has now scrapped the return three times after it failed to rectify the spacecraft's helium leaks and thruster outage issues. Watch! Follow @EconomicTimes

The spacecraft will be designed to guide the football-field-sized research laboratory back into the Earth's atmosphere after retiring in 2030.The SpaceX-built vehicle will effectively destroy the ISS by pushing the station into reentry from orbit."It is crucial to prepare for the safe and responsible deorbit of the International Space Station in a controlled manner," NASA said in a press release, with the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle needed to "ensure avoidance...

That contract covers the development of the spacecraft, with NASA to conduct a later procurement for launching the USDV.The agency announced more than a year ago its intent to pursue development of the USDV. The spacecraft will dock with the ISS and perform the final series of maneuvers needed to make a controlled reentry of the station over a remote ocean region like the...
