Storm disrupts Portugal as presidential run‑off election approaches

Portugal has been thrown into turmoil after severe storms battered large parts of the country just days before the nation’s presidential run-off election. Torrential rain, flooding, damaging winds, and widespread infrastructure disruption have forced authorities to declare emergency measures in several municipalities as political tensions rise ahead of the decisive vote. The storms, identified as Storm Kristin and Storm Leonardo in different phases of the weather crisis, have caused fatalities, extensive property damage, transportation breakdowns, and power outages across central and southern Portugal. (The Guardian) Election Campaign Overshadowed by Natural Disaster Portugal’s presidential election campaign has effectively been overtaken by the national emergency. The run-off election pits centre-left candidate António José Seguro against far-right leader André Ventura following a first round in which no candidate secured the required majority. Twilight Fish Study Uncovers Unique Hybrid Eye Cells | Mirage News

Researchers have identified a new type of visual cell in deep-sea fish larvae that challenges a century of knowledge about vertebrate visual systems. Dr Fabio Cortesi from The University of Queensland's School of the Environment said the finding could lead to new camera technology and medical treatments. "For more than 150 years, textbooks have taught that vision in most vertebrates is made of cones and rods – cones which work in bright light and rods for dark situations," Dr Cortesi said. "But our study of deep-sea fish larvae revealed a new cell type – a photoreceptor that optimises vision in gloomy or twilight conditions. "It combines the molecular machinery and genes of cones with the shape and form of rods. "This hybrid cell has the best bits of both the bright light and dark light systems...

Webb Reveals Hidden Layers of Uranus’ Upper Atmosphere

For the first time, astronomers have mapped the vertical structure of Uranus’ ionosphere, uncovering unexpected temperature peaks, weakened ion densities, and puzzling dark regions shaped by the planet’s extreme magnetic field. The results, made possible by nearly a full day of observations with the NIRSpec instrument onboard the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, confirm that Uranus’ upper atmosphere has been cooling for decades and offer a rare glimpse into how the ice giant interacts with space in ways unlike any other world in the Solar System.Tie rods et al. mapped the vertical structure of Uranus’ upper atmosphere, uncovering how temperature and charged particles vary with height across the planet.
