World Series 2024 live score: Yankees vs. Dodgers updates, results, highlights from Game 1

Historic Rivalry Renewed After More Than 40 Years

The Yankees and Dodgers, two of the most storied franchises in baseball, last clashed in the World Series in 1981. Their renewed rivalry in 2024 reignites decades of history and fan enthusiasm. Both teams have cultivated deep rosters and have been among the league’s top spenders, underscoring their commitment to winning championships.

This matchup is notable not only for the teams involved but also for the timing. The 2024 season has seen these clubs dominate their respective leagues, each securing the No. 1 seed in their postseason brackets. Their meeting in the World Series is a testament to consistent excellence throughout the year.

Star Power on Display: Ohtani Leads the Dodgers’ Charge

A defining feature of this World Series is the presence of Shohei Ohtani on the Dodgers’ roster. After signing a historic $700 million contract in the offseason, Ohtani delivered one of the most remarkable offensive seasons in MLB history. He became the first player ever to record a 50 home run and 50 stolen base season, showcasing his rare combination of power and speed.

Ohtani’s impact extends beyond the regular season. In his first postseason appearance with the Dodgers, he has been instrumental in propelling the team to the World Series. Alongside him, veterans like Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman provide consistent offensive firepower, while role players such as Kike Hernandez and NLCS MVP Tommy Edman have stepped up at crucial moments.

This blend of superstar talent and reliable contributors makes the Dodgers a formidable opponent.

Yankees’ Offensive Might: Judge, Soto, and Stanton Shine

The Yankees’ journey to the World Series has been powered by an explosive offense. Key sluggers Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Giancarlo Stanton have combined for ten home runs across the playoffs, with Stanton earning ALCS MVP honors for his clutch performances.

The top of New York’s lineup is a daunting prospect for any pitcher, capable of delivering game-changing hits at any moment. This offensive strength has been pivotal in their series victories over the Royals and Guardians, often producing thrilling finishes that highlight the team’s resilience and depth.

While pitching has not been the Yankees’ primary focus so far in the postseason, their ability to score runs consistently has kept them competitive and confident heading into the World Series.

Pitching Matchups: Flaherty vs. Cole in Game 1

Despite the offensive fireworks from both teams, pitching will play a critical role in the World Series outcome. For Game 1, the Dodgers will start Jack Flaherty, a reliable and effective pitcher who has been a key part of their rotation.

The Yankees will counter with Gerrit Cole, one of the league’s premier starters known for his power pitching and ability to dominate opposing hitters. This matchup sets the tone for the series, as both pitchers aim to establish early momentum for their teams.

Given the offensive capabilities on both sides, the starting pitchers’ performances will be closely watched and could heavily influence the series trajectory.
