Despite having no full-sided American football game experience, Traore’s athleticism impressed Clearwater’s head coach Jesse Chinchar, who saw his raw potential. Traore quickly learned the playbook and excelled as a wide receiver, demonstrating skills that translated well from his goalkeeper background.

His mother Zaia, who is French-Algerian, and sister Zeinab initially worried about the move but soon saw the progress and determination that Traore exhibited.

College Football and Position Transition

After high school, Traore’s college recruitment journey began. He initially committed to a program but was later persuaded by Arkansas State’s head coach Butch Jones to switch positions from wide receiver to tight end—a role Jones compared to NFL star Travis Kelce, whom he had coached previously.

Jones recognized Traore’s rare combination of size, athleticism, and catching ability, describing him as a ‘rare commodity’ with unlimited potential. Traore embraced this transition, likening himself to a ‘big ball of clay’ ready to be molded.

The NFL Draft and Historic Selection

The NFL Draft is a highly competitive event where roughly 260 players are selected over seven rounds. Traore was projected to be picked in the later rounds, and his selection by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round was a historic moment as the first full pathway graduate of the NFL Academy to be drafted.

Former NFL player and fellow London Warriors alumnus Efe Obada, who also serves as an NFL Academy ambassador, was present to support Traore and symbolically ‘pass the torch’ during the draft announcement.

British defensive coordinator Aden Durde, who helped the Seattle Seahawks win the Super Bowl, praised Traore’s breakthrough as a realization of the NFL Academy’s vision to open doors for international players.

While Traore’s rookie contract is worth $4.8 million over four years, his journey is far from over. He must still earn a spot on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster during training camp, a challenge he approaches with confidence and determination.
