Schools gain autonomy over attire and activities in hot weather
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek says schools can decide on uniforms and activities using health and weather guidelines to ensure student safetyNIBONG THICK: The Ministry of Education has reiterated that school administrators have full autonomy to manage student attire and activities during periods of hot weather.
Minister Fadhlina Sidek said this decision-making power is guided by official advisories from the Malaysian Meteorological Department and the Ministry of Health.
“The welfare, health and safety of students, teachers and all school staff is our primary concern,” she said. She emphasised that clear guidelines are in place for schools to handle operations during extreme heat.
This includes allowing students to wear sports attire instead of their official school uniforms. School heads can also adjust or postpone physical activities based on real-time conditions.
“School administrators have leeway to look at the situation from time...

Twilight Fish Study Uncovers Unique Hybrid Eye Cells | Mirage News
Researchers have identified a new type of visual cell in deep-sea fish larvae that challenges a century of knowledge about vertebrate visual systems.
Dr Fabio Cortesi from The University of Queensland's School of the Environment said the finding could lead to new camera technology and medical treatments.
"For more than 150 years, textbooks have taught that vision in most vertebrates is made of cones and rods – cones which work in bright light and rods for dark situations," Dr Cortesi said.
"But our study of deep-sea fish larvae revealed a new cell type – a photoreceptor that optimises vision in gloomy or twilight conditions.
"It combines the molecular machinery and genes of cones with the shape and form of rods.
"This hybrid cell has the best bits of both the bright light and dark light systems...
Fears of contractor ‘instability’ mount amid gateway three delays
Delays to gateway three approvals for higher-risk buildings (HRBs) may trigger financial “instability” among contractors, according to industry analysts.
Their warnings came as a Freedom of Information (FOI) request showed 44 schemes are still awaiting a gateway three decision more than three months after those applications were submitted to the Building Safety Regulator.
The statutory timeframe for a gateway three decision is eight weeks.
Geoff Wilkinson, managing director of Wilkinson Construction Consultants, told Construction News: “For a lot of these projects, the profit margin is low.
“It doesn’t take a lot of delay and additional bridging costs before you’ve wiped out any profitability.
“That will undoubtedly lead to further instability for contractors.”
He added: “I would be shocked if we didn’t see further contractor failures, particularly subcontractors.”
Wilkinson’s comments echoed previous concerns expressed by Rudi Klein, a barrister and former chief...
Loud decorations, open doors: Disappearing Chinese New Year traditions in Singapore, Lifestyle News
Lifestyle
With Chinese New Year approaching, conversations about whether it feels "less festive" or whether it still "feels like Chinese New Year" tend to resurface.
While we take part in the festive celebrations in Singapore, some traditions that once felt common are gradually evolving — or even quietly fading — amid growing awareness of sustainability, technological developments and shifting generational ideologies.
From childhood non-negotiables such as buying brand new clothes to traditional customs such as leaving doors open at certain auspicious hours, here are some disappearing Chinese New Year traditions in Singapore.Lifestyle 1. Gifting new notesDuring Chinese New Year, brand-new notes are often gifted in red packets to symbolise fresh beginnings for the new year.
In recent years, however, banks have started to promote the use of "fit notes"which are clean but used notes, for sustainability. While brand-new...
Is Litecoin’s (LTC) Price Rally Over—Or Is a Surprise Breakout Coming?
Litecoin isn’t the market favorite it once was. Since the beginning of the year, the price has dropped more than 36%, sliding to around $45 before showing signs of life during the recent market bounce. Even with that recovery, LTC price remains stuck below $55, a level that now acts as a ceiling rather than support. The broader signals still lean cautious, and momentum hasn’t fully shifted in favor of the bulls.
That said, the chart structure suggests this compression could resolve higher. If buyers manage to push past $55 with strength, a move toward $70–$75 could quickly come into play.Drop in Open Interest Hints Long LiquidationsLitecoin’s open interest tells a clear story of fading conviction. Over the past few months, both price and open interest have trended lower, signaling long liquidation rather than aggressive new...
