Fiery meteor generates energy of 10 tons of TNT, shockwaves reach ground in North Carolina
NASA Space Technology Serving tech enthusiasts for over 25 years. TechSpot means tech analysis and advice you can trust. What just happened? It was an early-morning wake-up call like no other for residents across the Southeastern US on August 30. Just after midnight, a dazzling meteor streaked across predawn skies, putting on a celestial light show from Tennessee down to North Carolina. NASA's Meteor Watch quickly confirmed that the brilliant fireball was indeed a meteor, burning up as it plowed through Earth's atmosphere at over 31,000 mph. The agency's analysis revealed the rock weighed around 1,000 pounds and spanned two feet wide before finally meeting its demise over the North Carolina town of Altapass. It made quite an entrance too. NASA calculated the rock's breakup packed the punch of 10 tons of TNT, generating a powerful shockwave that traveled...
Hubble Spots Active Spiral Galaxy in Telescopium
NASA Space Technology Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have captured an amazing photo of the lens-shaped spiral galaxy IC 4709.IC 4709’s swirling disk filled with stars and dust bands is beautifully captured by Hubble, as is the faint halo surrounding it. The color image is made up of observations from Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in the near-infrared and optical parts of the spectrum. It is based on data obtained through two filters. The color results from assigning different hues to each monochromatic image associated with an individual filter. Image credit: NASA / ESA / Hubble / M. Koss / A. Barth.IC 4709 is located approximately 240 million light-years away in the southern constellation of Telescopium.Otherwise known as ESO 182-14 or LEDA 61835, this galaxy has a diameter of 60,000 light-years.IC 4709...
What are the weird noises coming from Boeing’s Starliner capsule?
NASA Space Technology Boeing’s Starliner capsule carried astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams to the International Space StationNASA/Johnson Space CenterUPDATE: In a statement sent to Jeff Foust at Space News, NASA said the sound has stopped, and gave an explanation. “The feedback from the speaker was the result of an audio configuration between the space station and Starliner,” it said. “The space station audio system is complex, allowing multiple spacecraft and modules to be interconnected, and it is common to experience noise and feedback.” The feedback has no technical impact on the crew or the craft’s operations, it added. The hapless mission to the International Space Station (ISS) involving the Boeing Starliner capsule has encountered another...
