Webb Discovers Exomoon-Forming Circumplanetary Disk around Gas-Giant Exoplanet

Astronomers using the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope have found the carbon-rich disk surrounding CT Cha b, a giant exoplanet around 620 light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Chamaeleon. Their results provide the first direct insight into the chemical and physical properties of material being accreted onto a gas giant and into its potential moon system. An artistic rendering of a dust and gas disk encircling the young exoplanet CT Cha b. Hustak, STScI.CT Cha, also known as PDS 44 and TIC 454259409, is only 2 million years old and still accreting circumstellar material. However, the circumplanetary disk discovered by Webb is not part...

Derivation of embryonic stem cells across avian species

MainAvians, especially chickens, are crucial model organisms in developmental biology, virology, immunology, epigenetics, conservation biology and genomics related to domestication1,2,3. Moreover, the chicken model organism has enhanced our understanding of human diseases4. However, due to the lack of genetic tools in avians, the use of this species in research has been greatly limited. Embryonic stem (ES) cells derived from mice and rats can be maintained in culture indefinitely while retaining the ability to contribute to chimera formation and transmit through the germline5,6,7,8. This property has enabled us to generate numerous genetically modified...

Scientists Reveal That the Red Sea Completely Vanished 6.2 Million Years Ago

New research shows the Red Sea dried out 6.2 million years ago before being suddenly flooded by the Indian Ocean. (Artist’s concept). Credit: SciTechDaily.comKAUST researchers discovered that the Red Sea experienced a massive disruption 6.2 million years ago, completely transforming its marine life. Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have confirmed that the Red Sea once completely dried up around 6.2 million years ago, only to be suddenly refilled by a catastrophic influx of water from the Indian Ocean. Their work places a precise timeline on a remarkable event that reshaped the basin’s history. By combining seismic imaging, microfossil analysis, and geochemical dating, the team discovered that this transformation occurred within just 100,000 years, an exceptionally short span in geological terms. During this period, the Red Sea shifted from being linked to the...
