NASA invites public to design Artemis moon mission navigation tech

NASA Space Technology The Lunar Navigation Challenge, which officially opened on Sept. 4, invites the public to submit ideas for tech that astronauts will need to use on the moon during future Artemis missions.(Image credit: Freelancer)NASA is seeking the public's help for innovative solutions to help Artemis astronauts navigate in and around the lunar south pole. The Artemis program aims to land humans on the moon for the first time since the Apollo missions managed to achieve the feat over 50 years ago. Astronauts will land near the lunar south pole, where permanently shadowed regions may contain areas of water ice that could be accessed to support future missions to Mars. The Lunar Navigation Challenge, which officially opened on Sept. 4seeks ideas for a low-tech backup navigational device astronauts can use to find their way across the...

Moonquakes could ‘pose a possible hazard’ to Artemis moon missions, study finds

NASA Space Technology The moon’s Malapert Massif is thought to be a remnant of the South Pole-Aitken basin rim, which formed more than four billion years ago. More recently, this magnificent peak (lower left) was selected as an Artemis 3 candidate landing region. This image, captured by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera on March 3, 2023, is 15 miles (25 kilometers) wide in the center.(Image credit: NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University)New research indicates that potential landing sites at the moon's south pole for robotic landers and crewed Artemis missions are susceptible to quakes and landslides.Science results published early this year in the Planetary Science Journal point to a group of faults located in the moon's south polar region, making use of data on moonquakes recorded by seismometers set up by Apollo moonwalkers over 50 years ago."The potential...

NASA creates space sustainability division to consolidate orbital debris activities

NASA Space Technology NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy announced the creation of a new space sustainability division within NASA at the AMOS conference Sept. 20. Credit: AMOS webcastPARIS — NASA has established a space sustainability division that will consolidate much of the work the agency is doing on orbital debris and related issues.Speaking at the Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) Conference Sept. 19, NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy said the agency received the required approvals from congressional appropriations committees the previous day for the reorganization required to create the division. The division will be a “unified organization that will integrate our operational, research and policy functions,” she said.  Those functions had been spread out among several offices spread out among different NASA mission directorates and centers. She noted eight different entities within NASA have...
