SpaceX will bring Boeing’s Starliner astronauts home from the International Space Station

NASA Space Technology SpaceX will bring home the two astronauts stranded on the International Space Station for the last two months because of troubles with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, NASA announced Saturday.NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the decision, which followed a formal review conducted Saturday, was driven by the agency’s commitment to safety, especially after the loss of 14 astronauts in the 1986 Challenger explosion and the 2003 Columbia disaster on its return to Earth.“This whole discussion, remember, is put in the context of we have had mistakes done in the past,” Nelson said at a news conference at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. “Spaceflight is risky, even at its safest and even at its most routine. And a test flight by nature is neither safe nor routine.”The decision by NASA to bring home...

Blue Origin targets mid-October for New Glenn’s inaugural flight and launch of NASA’s Escapade Mars mission

NASA Space Technology Blue Origin’s New Glenn heavy-lift rocket and its Mars-bound NASA payload now have a tentative launch date. The company said on Friday that the inaugural flight will take place no earlier than October 13, carrying two probes built by Rocket Lab to help NASA study the effects of solar wind on Mars’ atmosphere. This will be the first time New Glenn flies after years of delays in its development, and the date cuts well into the window of opportunity for travel to Mars, which occurs roughly every two years based on the planetary alignments. That launch period opens on September 29 and extends to mid-October, per Ars Technica. The mission will lift off from Space Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The twin spacecraft of NASA’s Escape and...

Boeing’s new CEO must now weigh its duty to NASA vs. strained cash reserves

NASA Space Technology After a humiliating setback to its space ambitions, Boeing Co. faces a dilemma that pits its national duty against strained cash reserves. The decision about the future of the struggling Starliner program now rests with Boeing’s newly installed chief executive officer, Kelly Ortberg, after NASA announced Saturday that it wouldn’t send astronauts home from the space station on the faulty spacecraft. Following weeks of testing and heated debate, the space agency decided it was safer to use Elon Musk’s SpaceX.The specter of NASA astronauts being stuck in space is just one embarrassing moment of many for Boeing during an epically bad year that’s included a near-catastrophic blowout of an airborne 737 Max jetliner, federal investigations and an executive suite shake-up.That leaves Ortberg, who took over the top job earlier this month, and the senior leadership council known internally as “exco,”...
