NASA space telescope sees interstellar visitor comet 3I/ATLAS flare up while exiting the solar system

NASA's SPHEREx captured these infrared observations during a December 2025 campaign, revealing dust, water, organic molecules and carbon dioxide in comet 3I/ATLAS's coma.(Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech)New infrared observations reveal the rare interstellar visitor comet 3I/ATLAS dramatically brightening during its farewell tour of the solar system. NASA's SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) space telescope captured views in December 2025 of the comet releasing a surge of gas, dust and complex molecules two months after the object's closest approach to the sun — a surprising outburst that's giving scientists their clearest chemical look yet at material formed around another star, according to a statement from NASA."Comet 3I/ATLAS was full-on erupting into space in December 2025, after its close flyby of the sun, causing it to significantly brighten," Carey Lisse, lead...

Game Observations: 8 Takeaways From the Patriots Preseason Finale Loss to the Giants

The Patriots wrapped up the preseason with a 42-10 loss to the Giants in the Meadowlands on Thursday night. Although it was a disappointing end to a positive summer for head coach Mike Vrabel, keeping it in perspective is important. Only a small handful of players who played on Thursday night will make New England's initial roster, so the final score isn't too important. That said, it was notable to see certain veterans such as Kyle Dugger, Keion White, and Jabrill Peppers playing on Thursday night. With a new coaching staff, there's still some mixing and matching in terms of roles in new schemes. For example, Vrabel told reporters in New York that Peppers played to get a look at him playing alongside rookie Craig Woodson at safety. The...

Airborne observations identify major source of US landfill methane emissions

A team has found via testing from airplanes that landfill work faces tend to be responsible for the biggest share of methane emissions in U.S. landfills. Their findings are published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology. The researchers are from Carbon Mapper, a California nonprofit dedicated to finding ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Arizona State University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The primary gas causing climate change is carbon dioxide. This is due mainly to the sheer volume of the gas being pumped into the atmosphere. Methane actually insulates more heat than carbon dioxide but has received less attention due to lower overall emissions. Still, environmentalists have been growing more concerned about the gas as more sources of it have been found in recent years. In this new effort, the research team focused their efforts on methane emissions from landfills. Landfills tend to...
