The UK government’s AI Growth Zones strategy: Everything you need to know
The government is on a mission to make the UK an artificial intelligence (AI) superpower, by accelerating the adoption of the technology across the public and private sectors to supercharge the economy. According to the government, embracing AI will generate efficiencies in the way that businesses and public sector organisations operate, but achieving this will require the UK to develop the homegrown datacentre infrastructure needed to host compute-intensive AI workloads. To this point, the government outlined a commitment in January 2025 – following the publication of its AI opportunities action plan – to expand the UK’s sovereign compute capacity by at least 20-fold by 2030.
