Chandra Sees the Peacock’s Galaxy

NASA Space Technology Monika LuabeyaJul 22, 2024To commemorate the 25th anniversary of NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory launch, the Chandra team released this never-seen-before image of NGC 6872, a spiral galaxy in the Pavo (Peacock) constellation, on July 22, 2024. This image and 24 others, which all include data from Chandra, demonstrate how X-ray astronomy explores all corners of the universe.NGC 6872 is 522,000 light-years across, making it more than five times the size of the Milky Way galaxy; in 2013, astronomers from the United States, Chile, and Brazil found it to be thelargest-known spiral galaxybased on archival data from NASA’s Galaxy Evolution Explorer. This record was surpassed by NGC 262, a galaxy that measures 1.3 million light-years in diameter.See more photos released for this celebration.Image credit: X-ray: NASA/CXC/SAO; Optical: NASA/ESA/STScI; Image Processing: NASA/CXC/SAO/J. NASA’s Chandra Notices the Galactic Heart is Venting

NASA Space Technology These photos trace proof for an squawk vent attached to a chimney releasing sizzling gasoline from a plan spherical thesupermassive gloomy gapat the heart of theMilky Wayas reported in ourlatest press unlock. Within the principle picture of this graphic,X-raysfromNASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory(blue) were blended withradiofiles from the MeerKAT telescope (red).Previously, astronomers had known a “chimney” of sizzling gasoline come the Galactic Heart the utilization of X-ray files from Chandra and ESA’s XMM-Newton. Radio emission detected by MeerKAT reveals the enact ofmagnetic fieldsenclosing the gasoline in the chimney. The proof for the squawk vent is highlighted in the inset, which contains very most attention-grabbing Chandra files. Several X-ray ridges exhibiting brighter X-rays appear in white, roughly perpendicular to the airplane of the Galaxy. Researchers assume these are the walls of a tunnel, shaped like...

The Chandra X-ray spacecraft might per chance perhaps furthermore shortly trail dark, threatening a sizable deal of astronomy

NASA Space Technology A peep of the Chandra X-Ray Observatory after being deployed by Explain Shuttle Columbia's STS-93 mission on July 23, 1999.(Image credit: NASA)Final week, an ominous letter was published to the Chandra X-ray Observatory's website. "Dear Chandra neighborhood," it begins, "As many of you are conscious, the NASA budget for FY25 and beyond was released…"This letter was written by Patrick Slane, director of the Chandra X-ray Heart. In it, he's speaking about NASA's budget proposal for the following couple of years. It's a budget that paints Chandra's future as a bleak one — a budget that might per chance perhaps leave Chandra's mission within the support of."For scientists who rely upon Chandra for his or her analysis, the mood is one amongst outrage," Slane...
