10 Animal Adaptations Revolutionizing Human Technology
For millennia, humanity has looked to the natural world not just for sustenance or beauty, but for profound inspiration. The ingenious solutions that evolution has crafted in the animal kingdom, honed over millions of years, often far surpass our initial engineering attempts. This practice, known as biomimicry, involves drawing design and process ideas from nature to solve complex human problems. From the graceful dive of a bird to the intricate grip of a tiny lizard, animals are continually providing blueprints for revolutionary technologies that are transforming medicine, energy, robotics, and even space exploration.

North America Holds Largest Market Share in 2024
Meticulous Research®—a leading global market research company, published a research report titled, ‘Newborn Screening Market Size, Share, Forecast, & Trends Analysis by Technology (Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Pulse Oximeter, Molecular Assay, Immune Assay) Application (CHD, Infectious Diseases, Hearing Disorder) Product, End User – Global Forecast to 2031.’
According to this latest publication from Meticulous Research®,by 2031, the newborn screening market could be worth close to $2.7 billion. That is steady growth, about 7–8% every year. The rise is not surprising. More children are being born, and doctors continue to see higher numbers of genetic issues and congenital heart defects. Simple screening tests like routine blood tests, quick hearing checks, or even a pulse oximetry reading are making it easier to catch these problems in the first days of life. What is interesting is how governments are shaping...

Deepfakes are forgeries of people’s faces, voices and likeness generated through artificial intelligence (AI). They create a serious digital deception. Deepfakes undermine constitutional rights, reduce trust in media and distort fairness in elections. While many countries have laws that address the risks caused by deepfakes, enforcement remains a challenge.

40-Year Medical Mystery Solved: Why Smoking Helps Ulcerative Colitis
New research shows that smoking alters gut microbes in a way that reduces inflammation in ulcerative colitis. The discovery hints at future treatments that harness bacteria or metabolites instead of cigarettes. Credit: ShutterstockSmoking helps oral bacteria settle in the gut, protecting against colitis but not Crohn’s disease. This mechanism could inspire safer treatments.
A research team led by Hiroshi Ohno at the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (IMS) in Japan has uncovered why smoking tobacco appears to ease symptoms in people with ulcerative colitis, a chronic condition marked by inflammation in the large intestine.
Their study, published in the journal Gutrevealed that smoking produces certain metabolites that allow oral bacteria to establish themselves in the colon, where they activate an immune response. The findings suggest that similar benefits might be achieved through alternatives such as prebiotics...

This Workout Will Teach You to Train Like an Athlete
SURE, MOST GUYS want to look like some Greco-Roman statue, with slabs of lean muscle layered onto their biceps and shoulders and chest and thighs. The thing we often forget: You don’t want to move like a statue too. You want to move like an athlete, capable of channeling your strength in multiple ways, quickly shifting left and right when you need to, able to break into a jog or a run whenever you’re late for the train. You want to build muscle mass and power. The first part is straightforward enough; the second part is trickier. Power involves your ability to move quickly and explosively, as you do when you jump, and it keeps your body bouncy. And it’s this bounce that makes your muscle useful. To build that power, you’ll want to master contrast...
New statistical tool enhances prediction accuracy
Taeho. Holding: Chrisol Kreschol. An international team of mathematicians, led by Lehigh University statistician Taeho Kim, has introduced an innovative method that could significantly improve how scientists make predictions, especially in fields like health, biology, and the social sciences. The new approach is designed to make predictions that better agree with actual outcomes. Based on this idea, researchers named it the Maximum Agreement Linear Predictor, or MALP. This prediction approach achieves higher agreement in predictions by optimizing the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), which measures how well pairs of observations fall on the 45-degree line of a scatter plot, combining both precision—how tightly points cluster—and accuracy—how close they...
