Is Elon Musk’s “America Party” Worth Taking Seriously?

For this week’s Fault Lines column, Jon Allsop is filling in for Jay Caspian Kang. There have been several political groupings called the American Party, or something similar, in U.S. history. Perhaps most famously, this was the official name of the Know Nothings, the once secret society (members were told to deny knowledge of it, hence “know nothing”) that developed a virulently anti-immigrant platform and became, according to Smithsonian Magazinethe country’s “first major third party.” In the early nineteen-hundreds, an American Party in Utah sprang up in opposition to the Mormon church; the following decade, one was formed in New York State by supporters of William Sulzer, a former governor who had tangled with Tammany Hall and been impeached and convicted—to this day the lone New York governor to hold that distinction, though perhaps owing only...

‘Sovereign’ Review: In the Rare Thriller That’s Truly Political, Nick Offerman Is Powerful as a Lost Soul of the New Right

It’s the article we’ve all read 100 times. The crusty true believers will inevitably say they think Trump is too this or too that (“The man is far from perfect”). But then they’ll explain why he speaks for them anyway. Your typical diner-in-Trump-land article will reference such topics as the collapse of American manufacturing, the opioids epidemic, and the stubborn resentment that festers around immigration. Yet the persistent folly of these articles is that they never really, truly explain the rise of the new right-wing politics. They don’t explain it the way a movie like “Sovereign” does. Written and directed by...

How changes in California culture have influenced the evolution of wild animals in Los Angeles

For decades, biologists have studied how cities affect wildlife by altering food supplies, fragmenting habitats and polluting the environment. But a new global study argues that these physical factors are only part of the story. Societal factors, the researchers claim, especially those tied to religion, politics and war, also leave lasting marks on the evolutionary paths of the animals and plants that share our cities. Published in Nature Cities, the comprehensive review synthesizes evidence from cities worldwide, revealing how human conflict and cultural practices affect wildlife genetics, behavior and survival in urban environments. The paper challenges the tendency to treat the social world as separate from ecological processes. Instead, the study argues, we should consider the ways the aftershocks of religious traditions, political systems and armed conflicts can influence the genetic structure of urban wildlife populations....
