Former health secretary Sajid Javid has joined calls for a major overhaul of the National Health Service (NHS) that would see it replaced by a universal social insurance-based model. Javid said a “serious conversation with taxpayers” about how to fund the institution was “long overdue,” throwing his weight behind a paper by Policy Exchange which warned the NHS was “structured in a way that guarantees permanent crisis.” The Labour government has pumped extra cash into the NHS as part of a ten-year strategy to reform the system as the budget for the Department for Health and Social Care will increase by 2.8 per cent in real terms in the next three years. Ethiopia moves toward smarter health and nutrition supply chain management

A national dissemination workshop held on May 27, 2025, in Addis Ababa brought together government officials, health experts, and development partners to review the findings of a comprehensive assessment of Ethiopia’s electronic Logistics Management Information System (eLMIS), known as Dagu. The system is designed to enhance visibility and improve efficiency throughout the country’s health supply chain. Opening the event, the World Health Organization (WHO) Ethiopia Dr Patrick Okumu Abok,  Team Lead, Health Emergencies Programme, commended the collaborative efforts that led to the successful completion of the nationwide assessment, which covered 251 public health facilities. The study evaluated the functionality, maturity, utilization, and impact of the Dagu system on health and nutrition commodity availability, inventory management, and decision-making processes. Though the FY2026 budget isn't final, the newly signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) has already triggered devastating disinvestment in New York's workforce and economic stability. Rather than supporting cities in their efforts to build inclusive economic growth, Congress and President Donald Trump have advanced sweeping cuts through OBBBA, eliminating Job Corps (temporarily blocked by the courts), slashing the Department of Labor's budget by 35 percent, and gutting Medicaid. The timing could not be more harmful. Our city and state are making investments in green infrastructure, clean energy, life sciences, and housing. But Washington is pulling critical support from under us.
