In a significant development for media integrity in Africa, a Nigeria-based non-governmental organisation has launched an artificial intelligence-driven fact-checking tool aimed at curbing the spread of false information. The platform, named MyAIFactChecker, was unveiled in Ilorin by Brain Builders Childhood Development Initiative (BBYDI) and represents a strategic response to the growing threat of disinformation, particularly as 24 African nations prepare for elections in 2024. With support from international partners and local expertise, the initiative seeks to empower users with accessible tools to verify online content in multiple languages.
MyAIFactChecker offers users a range of functionalities designed for ease of use and broad accessibility. The platform includes a chatbot interface, a feedback mechanism, and an information search feature that allows individuals to assess the authenticity of articles, social media posts, and other online content. Crucially, the service is available in English, Swahili, French, Arabic, and several major local languages spoken across Nigeria, reflecting a commitment to serving Africa’s diverse linguistic landscape. This multilingual approach ensures that users from different regions and backgrounds can engage with the tool effectively, increasing its potential reach and impact.
According to Abideen Olasupo, World Director of BBYDI, the platform leverages cutting-edge AI technology to deliver rapid assessments of content credibility. Users can submit a query and receive an evaluation indicating whether the information is credible, partially credible, or unreliable. This functionality is intended to support critical thinking and media literacy, enabling individuals to make more informed decisions about the information they encounter and share online.
The launch of MyAIFactChecker comes at a pivotal moment, as Africa faces a surge in electoral activity. Olasupo highlighted that 24 countries on the continent are scheduled to hold elections in 2024, a period historically associated with increased circulation of false information. During electionering, misinformation can undermine public trust, distort political discourse, and potentially influence voter behaviour in harmful ways. By deploying this AI-powered tool ahead of and during these electoral processes, BBYDI aims to mitigate the spread of disinformation before it gains traction.
Olasupo stressed that the impact of false information on elections cannot be overlooked, noting that unverified claims and manipulated narratives often spread rapidly through digital channels. MyAIFactChecker is positioned as a proactive measure to counter this trend, offering a technological solution that complements existing efforts in voter education and civic engagement. The platform’s real-time feedback capability is designed to help users quickly verify claims they encounter on social media or messaging apps, where false narratives often originate and spread.
Beyond election integrity, the developers emphasise that misinformation poses threats to public health, social cohesion, and democratic stability more broadly. False narratives around health interventions, communal conflicts, and government policies have previously led to real-world harm in various African contexts. By providing a reliable verification tool, MyAIFactChecker aims to support informed public discourse across these critical areas. The platform’s design encourages users to question and validate information rather than accept it at face value, fostering a more discerning digital citizenry.
Olasupo also used the platform’s launch to advocate for responsible AI development in Africa. Having recently attended the 2024 United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum in New York, he spoke on the ethical use of AI in education and called for policies that maximise AI’s benefits while minimising its risks. He commended Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, for leading efforts to create a national Artificial Intelligence Strategy, describing such frameworks as essential for ensuring AI contributes to national development in a transparent and accountable manner.
FactCheck Africa has also introduced a 3-month AI Journalism Fellowship targeting journalists in West Africa. The programme is described as a comprehensive training initiative that will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the intersection of artificial intelligence and journalism. Fellows will receive instruction on ethical considerations, technical applications, and best practices for using AI tools in news gathering and verification. This investment in media capacity building reflects a long-term strategy to strengthen resilience against disinformation at the source.
Nura Jimoh, Executive Director of BBYDI, highlighted the organisation’s broader commitment to using technology for social good. She referenced past initiatives such as the CivicTech Hackathon focused on voter apathy, the evit.ng platform for monitoring election-related violence, conflictreport.org to address farmer-herder tensions in northern Nigeria, and KnowCovid19NG, which provided pandemic support with backing from the US Embassy. These efforts, she said, demonstrate BBYDI’s consistent approach of leveraging digital tools to address pressing societal challenges, with MyAIFactChecker representing the latest evolution of this mission.
The introduction of MyAIFactChecker marks a meaningful step forward in Africa’s fight against misinformation, combining technological innovation with a clear focus on accessibility and social impact. By launching an AI-driven verification tool in multiple languages and aligning its release with a critical election year, FactCheck Africa is addressing both immediate and systemic challenges to information integrity. The platform’s emphasis on user empowerment, media literacy, and responsible AI use suggests a holistic approach that goes beyond simple fact-checking to foster long-term resilience against disinformation. As digital spaces continue to shape public discourse across the continent, tools like MyAIFactChecker will play an increasingly vital role in helping individuals separate truth from falsehood, ultimately supporting healthier, more informed societies.
