Indonesians top global intake of microplastics, new study shows

Technology tamfitronics JAKARTA: Indonesians are the top global consumers of microplastics, a recent Cornell University study shows, estimating that they ingest about 15 grams of plastic particles per month. The study, published in the Environmental Science & Technology journal, mapped microplastic uptake in 109 countries and found that people in Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam, are the top consumers of microplastics worldwide.Indonesians topped the list as they consume the equivalent of three credit cards in microplastics every month, the majority from fish and seafood. Using existing data models, Cornell researchers said that Indonesians’ daily consumption of plastic particles increased by 59 times from 1990 to 2018.“This latest finding adds to the long list of the alarming dangers of plastic pollution in Indonesia … the existence of microplastics cannot be separated from the...

Generative AI’s biggest challenge is showing the ROI

Technology tamfitronics Robbie Goodall/Getty ImagesWhile executives and managers may be excited about ways they can apply generative artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) to the work at hand, it's time to step back and consider where and how the returns to the business can be realized. This remains a muddled and misunderstood area, requiring approaches and skillsets that bear little resemblance to those of past technology waves. Also: AI's employment impact: 86% of workers fear job losses, but here's some good newsHere's the challenge: While AI often delivers very eye-popping proofs of concept, monetizing them is difficult, saidSteve Jonesexecutive VP with Capgemini, in a presentation at the recent Databricks conference in San Francisco. "Proving the ROI is the biggest challenge of putting 20, 30, 40 GenAI solutions into production."Investments that need...

Beyond AI: Building toward artificial consciousness – Part 2

Technology tamfitronics Technology tamfitronics This piece, the first in a three-part series, looks at the control and storage technologies and requirements that are not only necessary for enterprise AI deployment but also essential to achieve the state of artificial consciousness. Beyond the hype surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) in the enterprise lies the next step—artificial consciousness. The first piece in this practical AI innovation series outlined the requirements for this technologywhich delved deeply into compute power—the core capability necessary to enable artificial consciousness. This piece looks at the control and storage technologies and requirements that are not only necessary for enterprise AI deployment but also essential to achieve the state of artificial consciousness.Controlling unprecedented compute powerWhile artificial consciousness is impossible without a dramatic rise in compute capacity, that is only part of the challenge. Organizations must...

India and U.S. vow to boost defense and trade ties in first high-level U.S. visit since Modi’s win

Technology tamfitronics NEW DELHI — India and the United States on Monday pledged to strengthen defense and technology cooperation and remove long-standing barriers to bilateral strategic trade, following a meeting between the national security advisers of both countries.National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is on a two-day visit to the Indian capital, New Delhi, the first from a high-ranking U.S. official since Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured a third straight termin India’s general election earlier this month. Sullivan met with his counterpart, Ajit Doval, to discuss progress on the Initiative on Critical Emerging Technologies, which the two countries launched in 2022.The initiative sets a path for collaboration on semiconductor production and developing artificial intelligence and was critical in sealing a deal that will allow U.S.-based General Electric to partner with India’s Hindustan Aeronautics to produce jet engines in India.On...
